Impact Stories from SOAR's Special Olympics Program!
- Richard is a visually impaired participant that went over 50 years without ever trying a sport. After much thought, he decided he wanted to try tee-ball. We paired him with a volunteer to work one-on-one with him at each practice to catch balls and direct him towards the tee and bases when it was his turn to hit. On Richard's first time up to bat, he hit a line drive! From then on, Richard was hooked! He purchased his own glove and was running the bases and diving for balls on his own for the rest of the season.
- Mary is an older athlete who is constantly giving tips and pointers to our younger athletes. She qualified to advance to the state tournament in swim and when confirming whether she could attend, she said “let one of the young athletes go, they’re new” and was happy to pass on the opportunity to give someone else a try.
- "Thank you so much for all you do for these teams. Such a wonderful organization! Cole had a blast and met a bunch of new friends. Sure makes my mom heart happy!”
