This year has been challenging for us all, but I am so proud to be part of a team that found opportunities for innovation in the face of adversity. In the wake of COVID-19 many of our participants were disproportionately impacted, losing all of their opportunities to be engaged with the community, including volunteering, recreation, and in many cases even employment. My amazing coworkers saw this challenge and stepped up to the plate, offering incredibly creative, safe experiences for our SOAR community to continue coming together to connect, learn, and receive support.

My favorite adaptation I was able to be a part of this year was our Fall Family Fling, which was reimagined as a drive-thru Trunk or Treat event. Over twenty community partners came together to decorate their cars and trunks, dress up in costumes, and greet over 130 eager trick or treaters at Pallisades park. Our trick or treaters remained in their vehicles as they drove through the event, admiring all the displays, and received a bag PACKED with goodies at the end. It was SO fun to be able to provide an engaging and SAFE Halloween event this year, when so much else had been cancelled.
